Unit 1 Ancient Maps and New Land

 THAT'S ANCIENT
With the sparked interest around the evolution of maps, the Grade 4s were hands-on during an art activity creating their very own ancient map of their favorite place.

Map Elements
We honed in on our Thinking Skills by playing a game and grouping each element with its definition and picture representation... without talking.

Changing Continents - Creating Maps
The Grade Fours became explorers on their own ships and managed to stumble across new land whilst out at sea!
Step by step they followed the process of creating a map for this new mass of land they discovered.

Baseball
To end off the week, the Grade 1's challenged the Grade 4's to a friendly game of baseball!

Have a great weekend!

Unit 1 Cartographers & DOGSTAILS

Welcome to the World of Cartographers!
Our classroom door, as the time portal, allows our students...I mean...cartographers to go back in time to historical moments and bring forth all their work, discoveries, and knowledge to help inform their current understandings.
They took a look at the evolution of one of their most trusty tools... the compass!

DOGSTAILS
An abbreviation they like to use, which has helped them for many years to make sure they do not leave off any important elements when creating their maps.
Date | Orientation | Grid | Scale | Title | Author | Index | Legend | Situation
🗺
Translation, Innovation, or Twister?
Our human grid is very suitable for making a connection between our Unit of Inquiry and the concept of direction and translation.

Not only did they have fun moving one another from point A to point B, but they also had fun creating their own multiplication game using the grid, and managed to squeeze in a game of 'vertices twister'.

Some Mental Math strategies that reminded them of the famous haka, and imprints to sign our essential agreements.

Have a great weekend!

Unit 1 Sorting Our Questions

Closed | Open | Going Further
Is it a sea of details or a one-word answer, the Grade Fours refined their understanding of thin and thick questions then got to sorting their own accordingly.
This allowed them to see the flow and direction that their inquiries will take them in.

Time to Collaborate
We were also very fortunate to engage in not one... but TWO collaborations with other classes!
First up was K1 who came around to conduct a survey on our modes of transport!

Then, we decided to conduct our own research by asking the Grade 5 and 6's to transfer some of their knowledge, which they aquired during their previous inquiries, to help us answer our question of,
"What sort of materials did ancient civilizations use to create the clay slabs?"

A BEAT HERE AND A TUNE THERE
These Remarkable Rhinos have started thinking of ideas for their Oktoberfest performance!

Have a great weekend!
