Unit 2 Ecosystems | Collaboration and Action

Sankt Martin
This week has been a very eventful one!
We kicked off our Monday morning learning about the compassionate story of Sankt Martin told by K2. We then received some sweet bread as a reminder of goodness in the world. Later that evening we gathered as a community to share the light, in the darkness, as we walked together on the island with our lit-up lanterns singing 'Lichterkinder'.

Action and Collaboration
The Remarkable Rhinos started creating their very own representation of an ecosystem. They started off deciding on a living thing - duck - and continued to build up the different biotic and abiotic components that would be found alongside the duck in an ecosystem.
To enhance the learning experience, for each lesson that we focused on the pond ecosystem, the roles of the team leaders were rotated. This approach empowered students to take charge of their group, manage tasks and time effectively, actively listen to the ideas and contributions of their classmates, and set achievable goals.

Action Takers
With a wealth of knowledge about fish tank ecosystems, one of our classmates proposed a brilliant idea to enhance our understanding of an ecosystem by focusing on the fish tanks within the school. To facilitate a more hands-on learning experience, she brought in some aquatic plants and a water-testing toolkit from home. This initiative allowed her peers to engage directly with the ecosystem, deepening their connection and comprehension of the vital components that sustain aquatic life.

🪴🪸
We had the opportunity to discuss the differences between natural ecosystems, which we found are self-sustaining, versus artificial ecosystems that are incomplete and need human intervention to survive.
With that, they learned how to check tank conditions because it helps us to maintain the water quality, prevent fish disease, support healthy plant growth, and so on. This water testing activity will be something we continue for a prolonged period because it provides a practical hands-on experience, deepens their understanding of aquatic ecosystems, and fosters a sense of responsibility in caring for living organisms
... AND...
transitions us so beautifully into our upcoming unit, which will focus on scientific processes, including the essential skills of recording and evaluating data.
Great work!

Grade 5 & 6 Assembly - Media
We had the privilege of learning from the Grade 5 & 6 class this week on how media influences our thinking and decision-making. They produced advertisements, a catchy dance, and a DSKI NEWSPAPER!

Have a fantastic weekend!
